The Painters

Royal Doulton's Master Painters, Chris Jackson and Tom Mason, have drawn on their years of experience painting Royal Doulton figurines and their deep understanding of the unique ways that colours combine and react during kiln firings to design an elaborate and lavish decorative scheme to complement and accentuate the detailed modelling of the sculptures. The decoration includes both underglaze painting and several layers of on glaze painting, interspersed with firings, to create the subtle and delicate effects.

The Sculptors

Andrew Edwards has an international reputation for public art and private commissions. His monumental bronze statues, including sporting icons such as Mohammed Ali, have been unveiled by the likes of President Obama, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Although Andrew was born in Stoke-on-Trent, the iconic home of the British ceramic manufacturing tradition, the smaller scale and different requirements of modelling in clay is a fresh challenge for him. He says, “There is expectancy within our culture to have maintained the most exacting craft skills of figurative sculpture, together with an accompanying honest work ethic, an energetic spirit and unspoilt imagination. Royal Doulton has been a flagship of that standard for 200 years and it has been my great privilege to contribute to this range celebrating it.”

Master Sculptors Andrew Edwards and Neil Welch

Neil Welch's passion for sculpture developed during an apprenticeship as a theatre designer, where he went on to join ceramic company, Wedgwood, to learn the art of figurative sculpting from the company's time-honoured Master Potters. Now a freelance sculptor, Neil has contributed many designs to the Royal Doulton figurine collection and a passion for capturing the character of a subject and expressing the sentiment and emotion behind the piece inspires each example of his work.
