The legacy of Bunnykins figurines? In 1972, 40 years after the introduction of Bunnykins Nurseryware, Royal Doulton introduced the original nine Bunnykins figures. Inspired by Walter Hayward's Nurseryware patterns, the figurines average 4 inches tall and each received a "DB" number. However, the popularity of the figurines really didn't take off until the 1980's, when Harry Sales, Design Manager of the Beswick factory, believed the rabbit characters should reflect the interests of contemporary children.
Realizing that Bunnykins figures could have an adult appeal, Harry introduced a collection of sporting subjects around the time of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. This new direction coincided with the 50th Anniversary of Bunnykins Nurseryware, and adults began to purchase the figures as whimsical gifts. Before long, the hunt among adults for early Bunnykins models added to the popularity and collectability of the range.
Hand-made and hand-painted using
multiple colors, Bunnykins' earthenware body allows for intricate and subtle sculptural details. Appreciated by collectors around the world, Bunnykins figurines have stood the test of time and remain one of the most easily recognizable ranges of Royal Doulton collectibles.
